Ellen Lind, Rachel Piitz and Taralynn Suzuki scored for the Mount Royal Cougars, as they beat the University of Regina Cougars 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Canada West women's hockey action.
Jess Ross turned aside 27 shots to pick up the win in net for Mount Royal.
Triston Riemer had the lone marker for Regina while
Toni Ross took the loss in goal, stopping 22 shots.
Mount Royal opened the scoring 7:59 into the first period, when Lind beat
Toni Ross for her first career CIS goal. Despite having three chances on the power play, Regina couldn't convert and went into the second period down by one. Regina outshot Mount Royal 14-9 in the opening period.
Mount Royal extended their lead early in the second with two quick goals. Piitz potted the second goal of her rookie campaign just 4:15 into the period. Just over a minute later Suzuki found the back of the net to give Mount Royal a commanding 3-0 lead. However just 42 seconds later, the Cougars finally managed to beat Jess Ross. Riemer scored her third goal of the season to cut Mount Royal's lead to 3-1.
But Regina only managed six shots on goal in the third and despite pulling
Toni Ross in the dying seconds, Jess Ross stopped everything that came her way to secure the victory for Mount Royal.
With the win, Mount Royal improves to 5-14-3 on the season. The victory also marks the first time they've won back-to-back games all year. They'll be back in action next weekend, with a home-and-home series against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Regina has now lost four straight including one in a shootout, and see their record fall to 10-9-3. They'll look to rebound next weekend when they host the rival Saskatchewan Huskies at The Co-operators Centre. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night.
