The University of Regina Cougars women's hockey team will look to get back in the win column this weekend when they play host to the rival Saskatchewan Huskies at The Co-operators Centre.
The Cougars were swept by the Mount Royal Cougars last weekend in Calgary, dropping the first game 3-0 on Friday before losing 3-1 on Saturday. They've only managed to pick up three points since the break, with their last win coming on Jan 4 in Lethbridge.
Triston Riemer had the lone goal for the Cougars last weekend, giving her three on the season. The fourth-year blueliner, along with
Alexis Larson, leads the team's defence in scoring with seven points.
This weekend is the start of the final homestand for the Cougars. They'll play host to Manitoba next weekend, before finishing off the regular season schedule in Alberta. The Cougars currently sit in fifth place in the Canada West standings, trailing Manitoba by seven points and only two points up on Calgary.
Meanwhile, the Huskies come in tied with Alberta for second place, with a 13-4-5 record. They split a pair of games last weekend against the Lethbridge Pronghorns, falling 3-2 in a shootout on Friday before rebounding on Saturday, shutting out the Pronghorns 1-0. With the victory, the Huskies have now won six of their last 10 contests, with three losses in overtime or a shootout.
Saskatchewan is led by second-year forward Cami Wooster, who is second only to UBC's Tatiana Rafter in league scoring with 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points so far this year. Rookie forward Kaitlin Willoughby has also been a force for the Huskies scoring seven goals and nine assists for sixteen points while showering opposition goaltenders with 73 shots on net.
The Huskies also have a strong goaltending corps. Second-year goalie Cassidy Hendricks has started the majority of their games, compiling an 8-3-3 record, 1.73 goals-against average along with a .930 save percentage. Rookie Karen Lefsrud has also been putting up impressive numbers with a 1.42 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage in nine appearances this season.
The Huskies swept the Cougars when the two teams met back in November, skating to a 4-0 win on Friday and squeaking out a 1-0 shootout victory on Saturday. The Cougars haven't won against the Huskies since last January.
Puck drop at The Co-operators Centre is 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night. All the action will be streamed live at
