The University of Regina Cougars men's hockey team kicked off 2014 in style, beating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 3-0 on Friday night to open the second half of the Canada West schedule.

Brock Appleyard, Liam Brennan and Christian Magnus all scored for the Cougars, while Andrew Hayes turned aside 20 shots to pick up his third shutout of the season in net.

Just seven minutes into the first period a wrist shot from Appleyard found the back of the net to give the Cougars an early lead. It was the third-year forward's seventh goal of the year, matching his total from last season.

The Cougars got a 5-on-3 power play late in the frame, with the Pronghorns' Mason Conway and Corbin Karl in the box for boarding and interference respectively. Cody Fowlie's shot from the side of the net was turned aside by Pronghorn goaltender Damien Ketlo, but Brennan pounced on the rebound and notched his team-leading eighth goal of the year high glove-side just after the first penalty expired.

After a scoreless and uneventful second period, and with Troy Hunter in the box serving time for a 'too many men' call, Magnus widened the gap to three, netting an unassisted shorthanded marker less than five minutes into the third.

With the win the Cougars improve to 9-8-0 while the Pronghorns fall to 1-15-1. The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. The puck drops at 8 p.m. All the action will be streamed live at reg.canadawest.tv.
