The University of Regina women's hockey team will host the Manitoba Bisons in a crucial series this weekend at The Co-operators Centre.
The Cougars are coming off a weekend split with the Saskatchewan Huskies, snapping a four-game losing skid with a 4-3 shootout victory last Friday night before falling 1-0 to the Huskies on Saturday. The Cougars currently sit in fifth place in the Canada West standings, five points back of the Bisons and three points ahead of the sixth-place Calgary Dinos.
Tori Head made her return from injury against the Huskies, netting the game-tying goal on Friday and is now tied with
Meghan Sherven for the team lead in scoring.
Bailey Braden also picked up a goal for the Cougars and along with
Kylee Kupper is tied for fifth in Canada West rookie scoring.
The Cougars once again received strong goaltending performances from
Jennifer Schmidt and
Toni Ross. Schmidt has a 7-6-0 record and a 1.82 goals-against average so far this year, while Ross has a 2.29 goals-against average and turned aside 29 shots on Saturday night in one of her best performances of the season.
The Bisons come into Regina having dropped a pair of games to the first-place UBC Thunderbirds by scores of 6-3 and 4-3 last weekend on the west coast. Second-year blueliner Kyleigh Palmer netted a pair of goals over the weekend and now has 24 points in as many games to lead the Bisons in scoring. Forward Meagan Vestby also found the back of the net twice, potting her sixth and seventh goals of the season, and now has 20 points on the year.
Dée-Ana Marion and Amanda Schubert have more or less split the duties between the pipes for the Bisons. Marion has a 6-5-2 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage, along with a pair of shutout. Schubert sports a 1.93 goals-against average while compiling a 7-3-0 record so far this season.
The Cougars and Bisons split their series in Manitoba back in early November, with the Cougars picking up a 1-0 shutout win on Saturday before the Bisons came back to win 5-3 on Sunday afternoon. Last season the Cougars swept the Bisons in all four meetings between the two clubs.
These will be the final regular-season home games for the Cougars. They'll hit the road next weekend to finish off their Canada West schedule in Alberta against the second-place Pandas.
