The University of Regina women's soccer team had their playoff hopes dashed on Saturday by the Saskatchewan Huskies as the visiting Cougars fell 3-0.
The Huskies move to 6-2-3 with the win, while the Cougars fall to 5-4-2. Including the win, the Huskies have earned 21 points this season, which puts them out of the reach of the Cougars (17 points).
The Huskies outshot the Cougars 13-3 in the match, with the shots on net favouring the Huskies 9-2. Regina keeper
Kacey McFee played well in net, stopping six out of the nine shots on net she faced.
It was in the 29th minute that the Huskies got on the board, as a Carmen Gorlick shot beat McFee. Erica Hindmarsh was credited with the assist.
The Cougars remained within striking distance until the 57th minute, when Jenelle Zapski scored on a penalty kick to notch her Canada-West leading 11th goal of the season and extend the Huskies lead to 2-0.
Hindmarsh added another insurance goal in the 90th minute as the Cougars defensive line was pushed up trying to get Regina on the board.
Cara Santaga only faced two shots on net as the Huskies keeper, and handled a pair of
Shayla Kapila's efforts with ease.
The Cougars and Huskies will square off again on Sunday, with kick off scheduled for noon in Saskatoon.
