For the second consecutive night, the No. 10-ranked Victoria Vikes needed a strong fourth quarter to pull away from a pesky Regina Cougars squad and ended up with a 78-63 win on Saturday night in Victoria.
The Cougars trailed by 12 at halftime, but got right back into the game with an impressive third quarter that saw them outscore Victoria by a 24-14 margin. And most of the ground was made up in the last two minutes of the quarter, with the Cougars going on an 11-1 run to make the score 56-54 in favour of the Vikes heading into the fourth.
Jonathan Tull tied it up on the first possession of the fourth, but it was all Victoria from there. The Vikes scored the next three baskets to start a 13-3 run that gave them a double-digit lead that they would hold on to for the rest of the game.
Victoria (2-0) had two players break the 20-point barrier, as Marcus Tibbs scored 22 and Chris McLaughlin had 21 to go along with 12 rebounds. Reiner Theil also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Jonathan Tull finished with a game-high 25 points for the Cougars, 17 of which came in the second half alone.
Alex Igual (pictured) added 19 points and three steals, while
Brandon Tull had eight points and a team-high five rebounds.
The Cougars (0-2) will have the week to prepare for their Canada West home openers, which are scheduled for next Friday and Saturday against Manitoba (2-0). Both games will tip off at 8 p.m. at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
