Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars beat Thunderbirds 2-0, collect first win of the season

The University of Regina men's hockey team notched their first win of the season on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the UBC Thunderbirds at The Co-operators Centre.

Tyler Henry (pictured) scored his first two goals of the Canada West campaign, the first coming late in the second period and the second just 1:05 into the third frame.

The first period produced some chippy play from both teams, resulting in a total of 40 minutes in the frame.
Both goalies stood tall in the period, with Matt Hewitt and the UBC defence killing off four powerplays and Lucas Gore and the Cougars killing two.

The second period brought much of the same style of play and the Cougars benefited from the physicality, striking with nine seconds left in the frame. Skylar Hladun knocked the puck in front and Troy Hunter batted it over to Henry who netted his first of the season to give Regina a 1-0 lead.

Henry's second goal came just a minute and five seconds into the final frame, as he battled with a pair of UBC defenders. Henry had the puck knocked off his stick by a Thunderbird defender on his first shot attempt but he stuck with it, regained control and fired a rocket past the blocker of an off-guard Hewitt.

The Cougars dominated the physical aspect of the game, as defencemen John Sonntag and Austin Bourhis did a good job of punishing any UBC skaters who made their way in front of Gore. Forwards Troy Hunter, Steven Turner and Liam Brennan were strong in finishing their checks for Regina.

Both teams adapted to a more disciplined style of play later in the game, as only four minors were assessed in the final two periods after the combined 40 minutes in the first period.

Gore was rarely challenged in the contest but stopped everything that was sent his way and limited any rebounds, totalling 28 saves for his second-career shutout and first win of the season.
Hewitt made 23 shots in the loss.

Regina improves to 1-9 with the win. The Thunderbirds drop to 5-3-2.

The Cougars will travel to Lethbridge next weekend for a pair of games against the Pronghorns.
