The Victoria Vikes used a huge run in the second half to pull away from the Regina Cougars in Canada West women's basketball action on Saturday night in Victoria, B.C.
The Cougars got to within two points midway through the third quarter after an
Alyssia Kajati basket made the score 52-50 for Victoria, but the Vikes went on a 20-5 run over the next seven minutes to go up by 17. That essentially sealed the win for Victoria, which led by at least 13 the rest of the way.
Now 2-0 in Canada West play after the weekend sweep, Victoria was led Amira Giannattasio's 21 points - all of which came on her seven three-pointers on the night. Cassandra Goodis added 10 points and 13 assists for the Vikes, while Jenna Bugiardini scored 12 points and Shaylyn Crisp had 11.
Four of Regina's five starters hit double figures in points led by
Charlotte Kot's 19. Kot also had a team-leading seven rebounds, while
Alyssia Kajati and
Jennilea Coppola both scored 13 points and Kate Polischuk added 11.
Kehlsie Crone had a career-high nine assists for the Cougars.
The Cougars (0-2) will host their Canada West home openers next weekend against Manitoba. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
