The University of Regina women's hockey team was led by a pair of rookies as they beat the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 in overtime in Saskatoon on Friday.
Emma Waldenberger scored the overtime winner as she took a pass from
Brooklyn Moskowy (pictured) and slid a low shot past Huskies goaltender Cassidy Hendricks.Â
Caitlin Dempsey and Moskowy scored the other goals for the Cougars. Kaitlin Willoughby and Julia Flinton responded for the home team.
Moskowy's goal came with five seconds left on a powerplay in the first period off assists from Waldenberger and
Nikki Watters-Matthes.
Just 65 seconds later, Dempsey struck with her second of the season. Dempsey's goal also came on the powerplay and was assisted by
Natasha Kostenko and
Stephanie Sawchuk.Â
The Huskies clawed back, with two powerplay markers of their own, to tie the game at 2-2 with six minutes left. The game went to overtime, where Waldenberger would pot the winner just over a minute in.
Toni Ross made 18 saves in the win for the Cougars, while Hendricks made 20 saves in the loss.
The Cougars move to 3-4-3-1 with the win and the Huskies fall to 4-3-3-1.
The teams will face-off again on Saturday evening in Regina, with start time scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
