SATURDAY: vs. Mount Royal, 2:30 p.m. (The Co-operators Centre)
The University of Regina men's hockey team will host Mount Royal University this weekend for a pair of Canada West games.
The Cougars (3-10-1) are coming off a win and an overtime loss last weekend as the result of a home-and-home set against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Cougars downed the Huskies 3-1 on Friday night at the Shine On fundraiser in front of a sold-out crowd at The Co-operators Centre.
Brock Appleyard returned from a lower-body injury in a big way, registering a goal and an assist in the win.
Troy Hunter also had a goal and a helper, and
Tyler Henry scored the third goal for the Cougars.
"It was great to have Brock back for us, he's a natural shooter and that's something that we need to have out there," head coach
Todd Johnson said. "It was a bit of a surprise that he jumped right back in and made an impact for us, but he's a guy that's always going to play hard."
The Huskies bounced back on Saturday at their home rink, and outlasted the Cougars 2-1 in a shootout.
Miguel Pereira notched his first-career Canada West goal in Saturday's loss, off assists from Skylar Hladun and
Tyler Penny.
Lucas Gore (pictured) stopped 31 shots on Friday and and 37 in Saturday's loss.
Gore has split time in net this season with
Mitch Kilgore. Both goalies have posted save percentages over .900 during the Canada West campaign.
Henry currently leads the team with six points on the season, followed by
Cody Fowlie and rookie
Dylen McKinlay, both of whom have five.
Mount Royal (9-5) is coming off two wins last weekend as they played a home-and-home against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. MRU topped the Pronghorns 3-2 on Friday in Lethbridge, and was victorious again on Saturday with a 5-3 win.
Mount Royal is led by Cody Cartier, who is third in Canada West with 22 points and tied for second in the conference with 11 goals. Tyler Fiddler is MRU's second leading scorer, with 18 points on the season.
"They're two of the top players in the league, they play hard in all three zones," Johnson said of Cartier and Fiddler. "We're going to have to defend them as a team and not back off and give them too much space to work. It's going to have to be a physical battle."
Dalyn Flette has seen the majority of the action between the pipes for Mount Royal, and is sporting an 8-3 record with a .934 save percentage.
"Mount Royal plays really hard and they have a fast style of play," Johnson added. "We're going to have to match the intensity and initiate the physicality instead of reacting to it."
Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre, while Saturday's rematch will face off at 2:30 p.m.
