The University of Regina's women's basketball team won its eighth consecutive Canada West game on Saturday night, defeating the Brandon Bobcats by an 84-62 score at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
One night after thumping Brandon for a 47-point win, Saturday's contest was a different game altogether. The Cougars led from wire to wire, but it wasn't until they outscored the Bobcats by a 31-16 margin in the fourth quarter that they put away a pesky Brandon squad.
The Cougars led 17-14 after one and opened up a double-digit lead at one point in the second quarter, but Brandon chipped away at the lead and pulled back to within three on a pair of Amy Williams free throws past the midway mark of the period. The Cougars took a 37-31 lead into the halftime break but after a Kaela Cranston triple on Brandon's first possession of the second half cut the lead back down to three, the Cougars restored the advantage.
Alyssia Kajati sparked a quick 9-0 run over the next two minutes and the U of R led by at least 10 for most of the third until buckets by Brandon's Aleah Bridges and Cranston chipped the lead down to seven heading into the fourth.
Mikaela Stanton opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to cut the Regina lead to 53-49, but that was as close as Brandon would come. The Cougars reeled off a 13-0 run that included three
Katie Polischuk triples to push the lead to 17 and they would cruise to victory down the stretch, their 72nd in a row over Brandon in a streak that dates back to the 1995-96 season.
Polischuk was 6-for-13 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 27 points in the win, topping her previous mark of 24 which was set in a game against Brandon last season.
Kehlsie Crone scored 10 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists, while
Charlotte Kot had 17 points and eight rebounds and Kajati finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Polischuk joined Kot and Kajati for the team high with eight boards.
Alyssa Montgomery didn't start for the first time this season, but came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points for the Bobcats (3-7). Cranston finished with 11 points – most of which came off three triples – while Stanton and Williams both added nine in the loss.
Both teams will now take a break from the Canada West schedule for the month of December before returning to conference play once the calendar rolls over to 2015.
