The University of Regina Rams were defeated 56-0 by Calgary on Saturday night in a Canada West semifinal game at McMahon Stadium, ending the Rams' season and sending the Dinos to the Hardy Cup next weekend against Manitoba.
The game was the last of Rams head coach
Frank McCrystal's career, who took over the program in 1984 and coached the team for 15 seasons in the CJFL and for 16 years at the CIS level. McCrystal's Rams won seven national junior championships and at the CIS level, both a Canada West championship and an Atlantic Bowl title on the way to a berth in the 2000 Vanier Cup.
On Saturday the Rams were down just six to the No. 4-ranked Dinos through one quarter after a pair of Johnny Mark field goals, but Calgary exploded in the second for four touchdowns – all through the air – to take a 39-0 lead at the half. The Dinos added a pair of majors and a late field goal to make the final score 56-0.
Calgary quarterback Andrew Buckley was 23-for-31 and finished with 404 yards including those four second-quarter touchdown passes. Brett Blaszko had seven catches for 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Jake Harty had eight catches for 112 yards and Rashaun Simonise had five receptions for 92 yards and two majors. Adam Laurensse and Elie Bouka each had a pair of interceptions for the Calgary defence.
Mitch Thompson had seven catches for 76 yards for the Rams, while
Jared Janotta had four catches for a team-high 86 yards in the final game of his CIS career. The closest the Rams came to scoring in the game was when the Rams drove all the way down to the Calgary five-yard line late in the second quarter, but weren't able to convert on their second third-down gamble of the drive after
Noah Picton was sacked.
The loss puts an end to the 2014 season for the Rams, who were victorious in a pair of must-win games in Week 7 (over Manitoba) and Week 8 (over Alberta) to finish with a 3-5 conference record and sneak into the postseason. McCrystal's replacement will inherit a team that will only lose seven fifth-year players to graduation including
Landon Buch,
Dillon Dawson,
Justin Edralin, Janotta,
Patrick MacDonald,
Cayman Shutter, and
Dean Viena.
