The Regina Cougars women's hockey team got goals from
Tori Head,
Kelly Regnier and
Kylie Gavelin as they booked their ticket to the Canada West semifinals with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday afternoon.
Kylie Palmer's goal early in the first period stood for the first 40 minutes of the game, but the Cougars scored twice in the final frame and added an empty-net goal to seal the win. First it was Head scoring on a wraparound seven minutes in, then Gavelin forced a turnover deep in the Manitoba zone and Regnier took advantage to score what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with five minutes left on the clock.
Gavelin won a race to a loose puck with a minute remaining and put the series away with the empty netter, her second goal of the series and fourth point of the weekend.
Making her second start of the series,
Jennifer Schmidt made 24 saves for the Cougars in the win.
The Cougars will meet Alberta next weekend in a best-of-three semifinal series in Edmonton.
