The University of Regina men's hockey team plays host to the No. 1-ranked Alberta Golden Bears this weekend at The Co-operators Centre. Games are scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night.

The Cougars are coming off a huge road sweep over Manitoba last weekend. They skated to a 3-1 victory on Friday night before defeating the Bisons 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. The Cougars are now two points up on both Manitoba and Mount Royal in the Canada West standings with four games remaining in their regular season.

During the weekend sweep of the Bisons, the U of R received phenomenal goaltending performances between the pipes. Andrew Hayes turned aside 41 shots on Friday night, with his shutout bid spoiled by a shot from behind the net late in the third period that somehow trickled into the net. He now has a 2.66 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 12 starts this season. On Saturday it was Lucas Gore's turn to put on a clinic, stopping 36 shots in the overtime victory.

Rookie forward Cody Fowlie continues to lead the Cougars in scoring with 19 points in 24 games, but the team got plenty of offence from its defensive corps over the weekend. Ryan Dech, Mark Schneider and John Sonntag all scored for the Cougars on Saturday. Sonntag's goal was the overtime winner, as the third-year defenceman stepped up to break up a pass in the neutral zone and led a 2-on-1 going the other way, then shooting short side to give the U of R the win and the weekend sweep. Third-year forward Tyler Henry had a goal and two assists over the weekend, while Troy Hunter chipped in with one of each.

The Golden Bears march into Regina after crushing the Lethbridge Pronghorns 13-0 and 11-1 last weekend. They are 8-1-1 in their last ten games and have lost in regulation only twice all season. Alberta has nine players averaging more than a point per game and four in the top ten in league scoring. Third-year forward Jordan Hickmott currently leads the team with 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points on the season. Sean Ringrose and Brett Ferguson are hot on his heels with 28 points each. Ringrose potted five goals last weekend, including four on Friday night.

The Golden Bears also have the top goaltending pair in the league with Luke Siemens and Kurtis Mucha. Siemens is 10-1-0 with a 1.80 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. Mucha has a pair of shutouts in 13 appearances, compiling a 11-1-1 record, 1.91 goals-against average, and a .907 save percentage.

The Cougars and Golden Bears met back in mid-November in Alberta. The Golden Bears swept the weekend series with 3-2 and 5-1 victories.

Puck drop is at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. All the action will be streamed live online at reg.canadawest.tv.
