Box Score
Michala Jeffries had to make only 12 saves for her third shutout of the year, as the University of Alberta Pandas beat the Regina Cougars 4-0 on Saturday night in Canada West women's hockey action.
Tess Houston and Jessica Kampjes had singles for the Pandas, while Deanna Morin netted a pair.
Toni Ross took the loss in goal for the Cougars, stopping 22 shots.
The two teams spent most of the first two periods excelling at defensive positioning, with neither team getting quality chances on the opposing team's net. But Alberta broke through at the 14:34 mark of the opening frame when sophomore defender Hannah Mousek threw a puck on net from the halfboards that Houston tipped into the top left corner to put her team up 1-0.
After a scoreless second period, the Cougars got the first good scoring opportunity in the third.
Tori Head broke in off the sideboards at the Alberta blue line but she was robbed by the glove of Jeffries. Kampjes responded 25 seconds later when she came around in front of the Regina goal and tucked in her 11th of the year.
Eighty seconds after that, third-year forward Alison Campbell circled around the Cougars' net and threw the puck out in front, ricocheting it off Morin's skate for her sixth of the season. Morin rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the game at the 12:30 mark of the third period.
The Cougars struggled on the power-play, getting zero shots on four opportunities while Alberta went 0-4 as well.
With the win Alberta finishes first in the Canada West standings with a 20-5-3 record, earning a bye to the semifinals, taking place Feb. 21-23.
The Cougars finish the regular season at 11-13-4, good for fifth place. They'll head to Winnipeg next weekend to face off against the Bisons in a best-of-three quarterfinal series.
