The longest game in Canada West history finally came to an end in the fourth overtime when University of Regina defenceman
Alexis Larson's shot from the slot found the back of the net to give the Cougars a 2-1 win over Saskatchewan and force a Game 3 in the best-of-three Canada West final series.
Just past the 12-minute mark of the fourth extra session,
Triston Riemer took a shot from the left point that deflected off the leg of a Saskatchewan player right to Larson. The second-year blue liner had plenty of time to walk in and her shot from the high slot went blocker side on Saskatchewan goalie Cassidy Hendricks to finally put an end to the game just under five hours after it started.
Jennifer Schmidt was fantastic again between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 49 of Saskatchewan's 50 shots to secure the win. Regina's
Kendra Finch and Saskatchewan's Marley Ervine traded goals in the second period, with Ervine's goal coming with just one second remaining in the second period.
The teams will now play on Sunday night to decide the Canada West championship (7:00, www.canadawest.tv).
After a scoreless first period, Finch finally scored the first regulation goal of the series six minutes into the middle frame. After intercepting a pass near the red line, Finch came into the offensive zone on a 1-on-1. She made a nice move to cut to her forehand near the right hash mark, and her shot beat Hendricks to put the Cougars in the lead and give Finch her second career playoff goal.
It looked as though the Cougars would take the one-goal advantage into the third period, but Saskatchewan struck on the power play at 19:59 of the second. Julia Flinton's slap shot from the high slot was redirected by Ervine past Schmidt, giving the Huskies what would turn out to be their only goal of the game.
Both teams had chances in the third period – including two power plays for Saskatchewan and one for Regina – but both Schmidt and Hendricks kept the door shut and the two teams went to extra time for the second night in a row. Saskatchewan had two more power plays in overtime, one off a
Kylee Kupper bodychecking late in the first and another after a
Tori Head tripping minor late in the third, but the Cougars were able to successfully kill off both of them. The Cougars actually had the best chance during the Head minor after
Katelyn Kennedy broke in alone after stripping the puck off a Saskatchewan player at the Huskies' blue line, but her shot from in tight went over the net.
NOTES: A win for the Cougars would give them their second Canada West championship in program history ... Sunday's game will mark the first time that the Cougars have played in a Game 3 with a conference title on the line, as the three other Canada West final series (2001, 2002, and 2003) they've played in were all decided in two games.
