Calgary wins University of Regina Summer Challenge

9/14/2014 8:31:00 PM

The University of Regina's men's hockey team hosted the U of R Summer Challenge over the weekend, a 10-game, seven-team non-conference tournament that stretched from Thursday through Sunday at The Co-operators Centre.

Calgary took the tournament title with a perfect 3-0-0 record, the only unbeaten team at the event. The Dinos started off with a 5-2 win over the host Cougars on Friday, then followed that up with a 4-3 win over UBC on Saturday and a 2-0 victory over Saskatchewan on Sunday.

A hat trick from fifth year forward Carter Selinger wasn't enough for the Cougars on Thursday as they kicked off the tournament with a 7-5 loss to Saskatchewan. Brody Luhning and rookie Tyler Giebel also scored for the U of R, while Andrew Hayes played all 60 minutes between the pipes. Selinger added another goal in a 5-2 Friday loss to Calgary, with Skyler Hladun scoring the other and Lucas Gore getting the call at goalie for the U of R. The Cougars lost 6-3 to Alberta on Saturday, with Selinger notching his fifth of the tournament and Christian Magnus and Jordan Reeve scoring the others for the hosts.

The Cougars resume their non-conference schedule with a neutral-site game against NAIT on Sept. 20 in North Battleford, Sask.
