The University of Regina men's hockey team was defeated 2-0 by the Saskatchewan Huskies in their Canada West opener in Saskatoon on Friday.
Rhyse Dieno got the Huskies on the board in the first period, and Michael Sofillas added a powerplay marker later in the frame.
The Cougars outshot the Huskies in every period, registering a total of 34 shots on the night compared to 27 by the Huskies.
Saskatchewan goaltender Ryan Holfeld stood tall and turned away all 34 efforts by the Cougars, earning the shutout.
Defencemen
John Sonntag and
Mark Schneider each had four shots on net for the Cougars. Rookie forward
Erik Benoit also added four shots in his first Canada West game.
Ian McNulty,
Dylen McKinlay and
Brody Luhning each tallied three shots in the loss.
Fourth-year goaltender
Lucas Gore (pictured) faced 27 shots on the night and turned away 25.
Regina had five powerplay opportunities but failed to convert. The Cougars were assessed 14 minutes in penalties.
The two teams are to meet again on Saturday night in Regina. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Co-operators Centre.
