The University of Regina men's hockey team battled hard but could not solve Matt Hewitt on Saturday, as the Cougars fell 1-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
Hewitt stopped all 30 shots that he faced to earn his second shutout of the season for the Thunderbirds.
Lucas Gore also had a spectacular game between the pipes despite taking the loss. Gore made 28 saves on the night and held the UBC powerplay without a goal in three chances.
Nick Bounassisi was the game's lone goal scorer, netting his tenth of the season off a slick assist from Brendon Wall early in the second period.
Wall faked a pass, moved to the side of the net and fed the puck across the crease to Bounassisi who was waiting at the side of the open cage for what would be the game-winner.
The Cougars pressed for the majority of the third period and
Brock Appleyard had a chance with time winding down, but his slapshot was blocked by fifth-year forward Nate Fleming.
With the result, the Cougars move to 8-16-2 and are eliminated from playoff contention. UBC improves to 12-9-5 and into fourth place in Canada West.
Next, Regina will host the Calgary Dinos for a pair of games at The Co-operators Centre.
