Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars hang on for 5-4 win, sweep Dinos

The University of Regina women's hockey team beat the Calgary Dinos for the second consecutive night, squeezing out a 5-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.

For the second time in two nights, the two teams battled in a high-scoring affair that ended up being decided by just one goal.

Emma Waldenberger, Kylee Kupper, Natasha Kostenko (pictured), Bailey Braden and Caitlin Dempsey scored for the Cougars, who move to 6-7-9-2 with the sweep over the Dinos.

Heather Berzins scored twice for the Dinos, and Chelsea Peterson and Kate Lumley added singles.

The Cougars struck first, as Waldenberger's goal came off an assist from Triston Riemer just 1:28 into the game. The Dinos would tie it just over two minutes later, but Kupper's goal at the end of the frame would restore the lead for the Cougars.

The seesaw continued in the second period, as Berzins scored the first of her two goals but Kostenko would answer with her second of the weekend to put the visitors back on top.

The Cougars built up a 5-2 lead in the third period thanks to Braden and Dempsey. Braden's goal was assisted by Kelly Regnier and Dempsey's tally came from Kostenko and Jolene Kirkpatrick.

The Dinos would score two goals in final minute of the game but it was not enough, as Jennifer Schmidt would keep out a couple more chances late and the Cougars would collect their second win in as many nights.

Schmidt finished with 31 saves, while Hayley Dowling and Carissa Fischer combined to make 23 saves for the Dinos.

The Cougars will be back in action next weekend as they play host to Mount Royal University for a pair of Canada West games.
