Live statsLive videoThe University of Regina men's hockey team will visit the Alberta Golden Bears this weekend for a pair of Canada West games.
Regina (6-13-1) is coming off two losses at the hands of second-place Mount Royal University in Calgary last weekend. MRU downed the Cougars 4-1 in the team's first game of 2015, and then 3-2 the following day.Â
Tyler Penny scored the lone goal for the Cougars in Saturday's game, and
Liam Brennan and
Mark Schneider each scored on Sunday.
"I was extremely happy with the effort that we played with," head coach
Todd Johnson said. "The effort has been there all season but we just haven't been rewarded for our hard work."
Alberta leads the conference with a 17-3 record heading into the weekend. The Golden Bears are led by Jordan Hickmott and T.J. Foster, who hold the top two spots in the Canada West scoring race. Hickmott has 16 goals and 32 points, while Foster has registered 14 goals and 31 points.
"To slow down those two guys, we're just going to have to outwork them," Johnson added. "They play a full game and don't quit, so we're going to have to work as hard as we did when we played them the first time this season."
Alberta is coming off two victories against the Calgary Dinos last weekend, winning 6-1 and 5-3.
Lucas Gore started both games between the pipes against Mount Royal last weekend and is sporting a goals-against average of 2.76 on the season.
Mitch Kilgore has also seen time in net for Regina and has posted a .906 save percentage to this point.
Cody Fowlie leads the Cougars in goals and points thus far, with four markers and 12 total points. Rookie forward
Dylen McKinlay is second in points for Regina with nine.
Kurtis Mucha has seen the majority of playing time in net for Alberta and has posted an 11-1 record to go along with a save percentage of .913. Luke Siemens has also made appearances between the pipes, and has earned a 6-2 record.
Alberta visited the Cougars earlier this season, winning 2-1 and 5-2 at The Co-operators Centre in October.
Friday's game is set for 8 p.m. Saskatchewan time, while Saturday's rematch will face off at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
