Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars sneak past Alberta with 3-2 win

The University of Regina women's hockey team improved to 3-1-1 on the season with a 3-2 win over the hometown Alberta Pandas on Friday evening.

Meghan Sherven and Caitlin Dempsey found the net, and Canada West points leader Emma Waldenberger added to her total with her seventh goal of the season. Autumn MacDougall and Alex Poznikoff scored for the Pandas.

Sherven opened the scoring, netting her third of the season just over three minutes into the second period. Sherven raced past a defender and scooped up a loose puck at the faceoff circle, beating Lindsey Post with a high backhand shot. Kylee Kupper assisted on the marker for her third helper of the season.

Alberta answered about ten minutes later, as MacDougall slipped a nice backhand through the pads of Toni Ross. Regina would re-take the lead before the period expired, as Waldenberger used her size in front and potted a rebound off a shot from Sherven. Jaycee Magwood also assisted on Waldenberger's goal, giving the rookie a point in all but one of the Cougars games this season.

Poznikoff evened up the score once again with a wrist shot in the third period, but Dempsey and the Cougars got the last laugh as the second-year forward out of Heward, Sask. put home the game winner on the powerplay with six minutes remaining. Alexis Larson assisted on the goal, Dempsey's second of the season.

The Cougars remain in second place in Canada West after Friday's action, trailing only the 4-0-1 Lethbridge Pronghorns. Alberta, meanwhile, drops their third straight and falls to last place in the conference with a 1-4-0 record. These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they pick up right where they left off at 2:00 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
