The Alberta Golden Bears were in top form again as they beat the University of Regina men's hockey team 6-1 on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Thomas Carr, Brett Ferguson, Jayden Hart, Rhett Rachinski, Levko Koper and Mitchell Topping were each able to bury a goal for the visitors.
Troy Hunter (pictured) was the lone Cougar to score.
The Golden Bears came out flying in the first period, and it was Topping who started off the Golden Bears scoring eight minutes into the opening frame.
The pressure continued a couple minutes later as Brett Ferguson was sent in alone by a long stretch pass and snapped a wrist shot past
Mitch Kilgore. Koper added to the lead before the period ended, stretching out for a one handed tip to put the Golden Bears up 3-0 at the end of the first.
Koper took a roughing penalty 34 seconds into the second period which led to the Cougars finding the net.
Zach McPhee and
Trent Lofthouse assisted on the marker, Hunter's first of the Canada West season.
Hunter's goal breathed some life into the Cougars but it did not last for long as the Golden Bears were able to score two more goals in the second, off the sticks of Rachinski and Hart.
Kilgore was relieved of his duties in net and replaced by rookie
Andy Desautels to start the third. An early penalty by
Tyler Bell led to another Bears goal by Carr as he ripped a wrist shot from the point. Tensions were high throughout the rest of the game as there was extra activity after a number of whistles.
The Cougars fired 29 shots at Luke Siemens, and Alberta countered with 53 total on Kilgore and Desautels.
With the win, Alberta now has a record of 3-0-1 and the Cougars move to 1-3.
The Cougars will resume action next weekend as they play the rival Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday at The Co-operators Centre in the ShineOn fundrasier.
