The University of Regina's men's basketball team finished in sixth place at the Capers Fall Classic non-conference tournament after a 100-88 loss to Canada West foe Calgary on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars had a 49-44 advantage over Calgary at halftime, but saw that lead evaporate as the Dinos opened the third quarter on a 16-3 run. Regina trailed by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter before coming almost all the way back as a
Brian Ofori free throw cut the deficit to just four points with a minute left, but the Dinos hit a three and sank seven free throws in the final minute to put the game away.
Jhony Verrone's 23 points led Calgary, while Thomas Cooper added 20 points and six rebounds. Regina's
Alex Igual was 6-for-13 from three-point land and led all players with 24 points, while
Will Tallman added 16,
Travis Sylvestre had 13, and
Brandon Tull chipped in with nine.
Consolation Semifinals - Cougars 107, Acadia 94 (OT)Friday saw the Cougars earn a berth in the fifth-place game with a hard-fought 107-94 overtime victory over Acadia.
The Cougars outscored the Axemen by a 24-15 margin in the fourth and forced overtime on a
Jonathan Tull bucket with three seconds to go. And the extra session was all Cougars, as they piled up 19 points to cruise to their first win of the season over CIS competition.
Jonathan Tull had a massive game for the U of R, going 19-for-25 from the line and tied for the game high with 33 points.
Brandon Tull added 19 points, while Igual had 18 and Tallman had 14.
Acadia's Erik Nissen also had 33 points.
Quarterfinals - UPEI 84, Cougars 79The Cougars opened up the tournament by jumping out to a 19-9 lead over UPEI after the opening quarter, but eventually fell by five to the Panthers to drop over to the tournament's consolation side.
Four Panthers hit double figures in points in the win, including Tyler Scott with a team-leading 20. Bradley States added 18 points, while Dut Dut had 17 and Zachary Usherwood scored 14.
Jonathan Tull led all players with 30 points in the loss for the Cougars, while Tallman had 16 and Sylvestre had a game-high 11 rebounds.
