Cougars in the win column after 2-1 victory over Bisons

The University of Regina men's hockey team won their 2015 Canada West opener on Friday night, taking a 2-1 overtime win against the hometown Manitoba Bisons.

Dylen McKinlay scored the overtime winner just 68 seconds into the extra frame, off assists from Troy Hunter and Mark Schneider. Ian McNulty also scored for the Cougars, from helpers by Devon McMullen and Sanfred King (pictured).

The Bisons goal was a powerplay marker scored by Liam Bilton and assisted by Brett Brooks and Channing Bresciani.

McNulty's goal opened the scoring 3:58 into the second period, as he re-directed a point shot from McMullen past Byron Spriggs.

Bilton answered for the hosts, knocking in a rebound at the 10:35 mark in the second for his first CIS goal.

McKinlay ended the game in the extra frame with a quick wrist shot from the circle that beat Spriggs.

Dawson MacAuley got the win in net for the Cougars in his first start with the team. The 6-foot-6 goaltender, formerly of the Regina Pats, stopped 40 out of 41 Bison shots on net. Spriggs made 30 saves for the Bisons.

The win marks the first time since 2006-07 that the Cougars won their Canada West season opener.

The rematch is set for tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. CDT.
