The University of Regina men's hockey team will be at home this weekend to take on Mount Royal University after a five-game road trip that saw the Cougars go 1-4.
Regina snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 3-2 double overtime win over the Calgary Dinos last Saturday. The win bumped the Cougars' record to 2-8 on the season, and gave the Cougars the split after falling to the Dinos 5-0 on Friday.
The Cougars had some offensive production from the blue line in Saturday's win, with
Mark Schneider and
Landon Peel both scoring their first goals of the season. Schneider's goal came in the first period on the powerplay, with
Trent Lofthouse and
Zach McPhee (pictured) assisting on the goal. Peel's goal was his first career Canada West marker and was the double overtime game winner off helpers from McPhee and
Cody Fowlie.
Sanfred King also scored in the win, with his second of the season.
The Cougars continue to rotate goaltenders in net, and
Mitch Kilgore made the most out of his opportunity on Saturday. The fourth-year netminder out of Outlook, Sask. stopped 46 shots in the win, and impressed head coach
Todd Johnson.
"Mitch was very calm and played with confidence, and the team did a good job of limiting second shot opportunities. He was in good position and did a great job against a pretty powerful offensive attack."
Dawson MacAuley made the start on Friday, making 34 saves in the loss.
Andy Desautels has also seen time between the pipes, stopping 42 shots in four periods of work for Regina.
Mount Royal heads into the weekend with a 4-4-2 record, tied for fifth place in the conference. Tyler Fiddler is tied for third in the conference with 12 points, having notched three goals and nine assists. Matthew Brown is Canada West's leading goal scorer, with eight markers through 10 games.
"They have some great offensive players, so we need to limit their opportunities and play in their end when they're on the ice," Johnson said. "You can't completely shut them down but you have to make sure that you play really hard defensively on every shift."
Colin Cooper has seen the majority of action in net for MRU, posting a 2.59 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage in seven appearances. Cam Lanigan has also made three starts, and recorded marks of 3.02 and .855.
This weekend also marks the second installment of the Cougars Family Games, where the team arranges to have families of out of town players in for the games.
"We get a really positive response from both parents and athletes," Johnson added. "Parents get to know each other and it's nice for everyone to build relationships with others over the next four or five years."
Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m. while Saturday's rematch will face off at 3 p.m.
