Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars improve to 4-0 with 20-point win over Lethbridge

The University of Regina's women's basketball team won for the fourth time in as many Canada West games on Saturday night with a 74-54 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Four Cougars hit double figures in scoring, including Charlotte Kot finishing with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Katie Polischuk led all players with 18 points, all of which came on her six triples as she smashed her own school record for most attempted three-pointers in a Canada West game. Alyssia Kajati also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Christina McCusker scored 10 off the bench for the Cougars.

"I'm pleased we got the sweep this weekend coming off our bye week," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "We've got some things to build on as we had into what will be a critical road series next weekend against a good Alberta team."

For Lethbridge, Kendra Lee didn't start but led the Pronghorns with 10 points. Katie Keith finished with seven points, 12 rebounds, and four assists as Lethbridge falls to 0-4 on the season.

Though Friday's game saw Regina bolt out of the gates early and never look back, Lethbridge hung around with the No. 6-ranked Cougars for much of the first quarter. It was a one-possession game until the Cougars went on a late 9-0 run, which was capped by a Britton Belyk triple at the buzzer which put the home side up 27-16 after the opening 10 minutes. The Cougars led by double digits for almost all of the second quarter and were up 47-34 at the break, though Lethbridge still hung around and cut the deficit to eight points on three separate occasions throughout the third.

But the Cougars clamped down on defence down the stretch, allowing just six points in the fourth quarter. Their 7-0 run early in the period put them up by 19, essentially putting it the game out of reach.

Both teams will continue the Canada West schedule next weekend, including the Cougars' big series at Alberta. Lethbridge will play host to the University of Victoria.

NOTES: With Kehlsie Crone out of the lineup after sustaining an injury in Friday's game, Belyk made her first Canada West start for the Cougars and finished with six points and seven rebounds.
