The University of Regina women's hockey team closes out its 2015 schedule this weekend, battling the hometown Manitoba Bisons on Friday and Saturday.
The Cougars (5-5-3-1) are coming off two wins over the Lethbridge Pronghorns, a 3-0 win on Friday and a 3-2 triumph in double overtime the following day at The Co-operators Centre.
Kylie Gavelin was a force in the two wins, registering her second-consecutive five point weekend. Her efforts earned her Canada West Second Star of the Week honours and pulled her in to a tie for first in the Canada West scoring race. Gavelin's 17 points ties her with Cougar rookie
Jaycee Magwood and Calgary's Iya Gavrilova for not only the Canada West lead, but all of CIS.
The Cougars and Bisons met earlier in the season, with the Bisons taking the opener 3-1 before the Cougars rebounded for a 3-2 win in the rematch.
Manitoba (8-5-0-1) is tied with the Alberta Pandas for top spot in the conference, and is led by Alanna Sharman and Alana Serhan. Both forwards have 11 points for the Bisons, and Karissa Kirkup is right behind with 10 of her own.
Rachel Dyck has seen the majority of action between the pipes for Manitoba, posting a 1.67 goals-against average with a conference-leading .936 save percentage. Regina's
Toni Ross is just behind, stopping shots at a .935 rate.
The Cougars and Bisons will battle Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. local time.
