The University of Regina's men's basketball team fell to 3-3 on the season after a tight 66-63 road loss to Alberta on Saturday night at the Saville Centre in Edmonton.
The Cougars trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half before getting back into the game by scoring the final eight points of the third quarter. The U of R also reeled off a quick 6-0 run capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by
Aaron McGowan with 1:24 left that made it a one-point ball game, but McGowan's and-one turned out to be the final points of the game for the Cougars.
Mamadou Gueye hit a free throw for Alberta (4-4) on the ensuing possession and added another free throw with 14 seconds left to put the Golden Bears up by three. The Cougars actually had two chances to tie it with three-pointers in the final moments of the game, but both shots drew iron to preserve the victory for Alberta.
Gueye scored over half of Alberta's points and fell just short of a double-double, finishing with 35 points and tying teammate Brody Clarke for the game high with nine rebounds.
McGowan led the Cougars (3-3) with 22 points and eight rebounds, while
Jonathan Tull had 13 points, eight rebounds, and six steals and
Brian Ofori came off the bench to score 12.
The Cougars will close out the first half of the Canada West schedule next weekend with a pair of home games against Winnipeg (3-3).
