In 45 seasons at the interuniversity level, the University of Regina's men's basketball team had never defeated arch-rival Brandon back-to-back nights on the road.
That all changed Saturday, as the Cougars followed Friday's victory with an 87-73 win at BU's Healthy Living Centre.
Jonathan Tull had a fine game for the U of R in the win, going 11-for-18 from the field and leading all players not only in points, but also in rebounds. Tull finished with 29 points and 11 boards for the Cougars while adding three steals for good measure.
"Jonathan had a great game tonight for us, as he almost always does," Cougars head coach
Steve Burrows said. "It was a much different game than last night and we got some stops when we needed to get stops. We had lots of contributions up and down the roster – Mike (Malecha) hit a couple of shots, Aaron (McGowan) gave us some good minutes off the bench, (Stephen) Shields was solid again. It was just a good team win for us."
Brandon Tull added 14 points for the Cougars, while
Will Tallman scored 11. McGowan had three points and four rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench, with Malecha scoring five points in just four minutes and Shields ending up with five points in 10 minutes on the floor.
Alex Igual flirted with a triple-double, finishing the game with seven points, eight rebounds, and nine assists for the U of R.
Brandon's D.J. Jordan didn't start, but finished with a game-high 25 points for the Bobcats.
Though the game featured seven lead changes, those were all in the first 15 minutes of the game as the two teams went back and forth. The Cougars took the lead for good just past three minutes into the second quarter on a
Jonathan Tull layup midway through the second, though it wasn't until well into the second half until the Cougars put this one away. They led 45-39 at halftime, and a 10-3 run over four minutes of game time in the third gave the U of R its first double-digit lead of the contest.
Brandon got the lead back down to five late in the third, but the Cougars closed the quarter on an 8-2 run which saw Malecha score all five of his points in the last 90 seconds of the quarter. They led 67-56 through three, and led by at least 10 points for almost the entirety of the fourth.
The Cougars (2-0) will now have a week off from the Canada West schedule before their home openers on Nov. 20 and Nov. 21 against Lethbridge.
