The University of Regina men's hockey team earned a weekend split on Saturday night after a 3-2 double overtime win over the hometown Calgary Dinos.
Rookie defenceman
Landon Peel was the hero on Saturday, netting the double overtime winner for his first career Canada West goal. The marker came just 23 seconds into the second overtime period off assists from
Cody Fowlie (pictured) and
Zach McPhee.
Sanfred King and
Mark Schneider also scored for the Cougars in the team's second win of the season. Chris Collins and Elgin Pearce replied for the Dinos, who drop to 4-4-2 with the result.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first period off the stick of Schneider. The fifth-year defenceman scored his first of the season at the 19:01 mark of the opening frame, off assists from McPhee and
Trent Lofthouse.
Calgary answered with the only goal of the second period, coming near the midway point of the frame. Collins scored his second of the weekend and fifth goal of the season on the powerplay with assists from Spencer Edwards and Max Ross.
King got the Cougars back on top less than a minute into the third period, beating Steven Stanford for his second of the season.
Ian McNulty and
Troy Hunter collected assists on the play. Calgary answered once again, as Pearce netted his fourth of the year at the 16:52 mark. Edwards and Drydn Dow earned helpers.
The first overtime period didn't solve anything, but the second OT opened up the ice with a three-on-three situation. It didn't take the Cougars long, as they improved to 2-8-0 on the only shot of the second overtime.
Mitch Kilgore stood on his head in net for the Cougars, stopping 46 shots to earn his first win of the 2015-16 season. Stanford made 23 saves for the Dinos.
The Cougars are back in action next weekend as they play host to Mount Royal University for a pair of games.
