Huskies earn split, top Cougars 2-1

The University of Regina women's hockey team closed its 2014-15 Canada West regular season with a 2-1 loss against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday.

With the win, the Huskies (10-4-10-4) secure fifth place in the conference and leave the Cougars in sixth at 6-9-11-2. Both teams will compete in Canada West quarterfinals next weekend.

Chelsey Sundby and Marley Ervine scored for the Huskies. Meghan Sherven replied for the Cougars off an assist from Krista Metz.

Sundby's goal came with 13 seconds remaining in the first period, and Ervine's came early in the second frame.

Sherven cut the lead to one with three and a half minutes left in the second, but the Cougars could not beat Jerrica Waltz in the third period as the Huskies defence clamped down to secure the split.

Waltz made 28 saves for the Huskies and Jennifer Schmidt stopped 23 shots in net for the Cougars.

Regina will travel to Winnipeg for a best-of-three quarterfinal series against the Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
