For the second straight night the University of Regina women's hockey team scored a miraculous goal to force an extra period, but the Cougars came up just short in Game 3 on Sunday, falling to the Manitoba Bisons 3-2 in overtime.
The Cougars were down 2-0 heading into the third period thanks to goals from Manitoba's Alanna Sharman and Maggie Litchfield-Medd, but the visiting Cougars clawed back.
Emma Waldenberger scored a powerplay goal from
Alexis Larson (pictured) just under six minutes into the final frame to cut the lead and make it a 2-1 game.
Regina had a number of chances to find the equalizing goal, but a breakaway chance by
Kylie Gavelin and a late scramble in front of the Bisons net were both turned aside by some nice goaltending from Rachel Dyck.
The Cougars battled until the final buzzer and it paid off, as
Bailey Braden netted the tying goal with just one second on the clock. The Cougars had lots of traffic in front after
Toni Ross was pulled for the extra attacker. The puck slid across the slot to Braden, who fired a wrist shot that went off the crossbar and in to send the game to overtime. Larson and
Brooklyn Moskowy assisted on the tying goal.
It seemed as though all the momentum belonged to the Cougars, but the Bisons came away with the winner just under four minutes into overtime. Lauryn Keen swooped down the left and put the puck in front, where Courtlyn Oswald took the pass and beat Ross to send the Bisons to the Canada West semifinal.
Ross made 35 saves on the night, and Dyck stopped 27 shots.
