Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Kupper, Cougars complete sweep of Lethbridge

The University of Regina women's hockey team completed the four-game season sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday afternoon, taking a 4-2 win from the hometown 'Horns.

Emma Waldenberger opened the scoring with her second goal of the weekend and 11th of the season just 40 seconds into the contest. Kylee Kupper (pictured) scored twice in just over two minutes in the middle frame, and Nikki Watters-Matthes added an insurance marker in the third for Regina. Kirsten Reeves and Lauren Fredrich replied for the Pronghorns, who drop to 6-11-2 with the loss.

Waldenberger got the Cougars out of the gate on the right note, as she banged home a rebound less than a minute in. Alexis Larson's point shot was stopped by Alicia Anderson but Waldenberger found herself in the right spot to put the Cougars ahead.

Lethbridge beat Toni Ross for the first time on the weekend near the end of the first period, with a similar looking goal, as Reeves knocked in a rebound to draw the 'Horns even.

The beginning of the second frame was uneventful, but Kupper put the Coguars ahead for good with two goals in 125 seconds. Kupper's first tally, her first regular season goal of the year, was a beauty of a wrist shot that beat a screened Anderson high blocker side. Meghan Sherven and Tessa Wilson collected helpers on the play. Kupper's second goal was another wrist shot that also beat Anderson high. Chelsea Perepeluk and Watters-Matthes assisted on the goal.

Fredrich cut the lead before the end of the period, but Watters-Matthes scored early in the third to restore the two-goal lead. The Cougars continued to pressure, putting 17 more shots on net over the course of the third, and Ross stood strong at the other end of the ice.

Ross ended up with 24 saves while Anderson stopped 41 in the loss.

As of Saturday afternoon, the Cougars' win catapults them from fifth place in the Canada West standings all the way up to first. That distinction won't last long, however, as the other six Canada West teams are all in action on Saturday evening.

Regina (9-7-3-1) is back at home next weekend, hosting the Alberta Pandas for a pair of crucial Canada West games.
