The University of Regina men's hockey team is away from home again this weekend, as the Cougars are in Calgary to battle Mount Royal University.
Regina hosted MRU back in November, falling 9-2 and 6-3 to the visitor's high-powered attack. Mount Royal is sporting a 13-6-3 record, good enough for third in Canada West. Regina remains in last place in the conference at 5-17-0.
The Cougars were swept last weekend by a potent Alberta attack, falling 4-1 and 5-1 to the No. 5-ranked Golden Bears.
Dillan McCombie and
Trent Lofthouse scored for the Cougars.
Rookie JJ Coleshaw is tied for the team lead in points with 12.
Ian McNulty (pictured) and
Cody Fowlie each have 12, while
Miguel Pereira and
Mark Schneider are right behind with 11. Other Cougar skaters in double figures are
Zach McPhee and
Troy Hunter, who each have 10 points to their credit.
Mount Royal has had no trouble finding opposing nets this season, with Tyler Fiddler leading the way on offence. Fiddler is in second place in the Canada West scoring race headed into the weekend, with 10 goals and 20 assists. Cam Maclise has chipped in with nine goals and 11 helpers, while Matthew Brown and Jamie King each have 19 points.
Mitch Kilgore has played the most minutes between the pipes for Regina, but
Dawson MacAuley's play of late has earned him some more ice time. MacAuley stopped a career-high 54 shots in Friday's loss to the Golden Bears and followed that up with just over two periods of work, making 33 saves before
Andy Desautels came on in relief. MacAuley leads the Cougars with a save percentage of .899 and goals-against average of 3.92.
Colin Cooper has been the main feature in net for MRU, registering 11 wins and a .907 save percentage in 16 appearances. Cam Lanigan has also had some opportunities in net, sporting a 2-2-2 record with a .889 save percentage in seven games.
The teams will meet for the battle of the Cougars on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then again on Saturday, with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. local time.
