The University of Regina men's hockey team fell victim to a massive third period by Mount Royal University en route to a 7-3 final score on Saturday afternoon.
Through 40 minutes the game was scrappy and found the two teams knotted 2-2, but MRU piled up five goals in the third period to put the result out of question.
Mount Royal had seven different goal scorers as Tyler Fiddler, Tanner Olstad, Jamie King and David Stephens each registered a goal and an assist. Riley Point, Connor Rankin and Matthew Brown added singles.
Sanfred King (pictured),
Trent Lofthouse and
Christian Magnus each scored for Regina.
John Sonntag,
Dillan McCombie,
Ian McNulty and
Tyler Giebel collected assists for the Cougars.
A night after being outshot 40-20 by Mount Royal, the Cougars upped their offensive pressure and were able to put 38 shots on net. Colin Cooper was solid as the last line of defence for MRU, stopping 35 of those shots. At the other end of the rink,
Mitch Kilgore faced exactly 40 shots for the second consecutive game, stopping 33.
Regina jumped out to an early lead on Saturday, as
Sanfred King was able to net his fourth of the season on a nice setup from Giebel. MRU's captain, Brown, would answer on the powerplay five minutes later, and that was all the scoring in the opening 20 minutes.
The second period showed more of the same, with Olstad scoring for MRU but Lofthouse evened it up just 35 ticks after that. The Cougars outshot the home team 18-8 in the frame, but were unable to beat Cooper to regain the lead.
Mount Royal blew the doors off the building in the third period, as Jamie King, Point and Fiddler scored three unanswered to balloon the lead to 5-2. Magnus scored his third of the weekend just after Fiddler's goal but Rankin and Stephens each scored late to put it away. The Cougars' frustrations would boil over late, as
Cody Fowlie and
Tyler Bell were each assessed 10-minute game misconducts within the last two and a half minutes.
Regina (5-19-0) is at home next weekend to play host to the UBC Thunderbirds, who are fighting for their playoff lives in sixth place.
