Women’s hoops back at CKHS; Cougars host Trinity Saturday, Sunday

The University of Regina's women's basketball team returns to the hardcourt this weekend after a month away from the Canada West schedule. The Cougars host Trinity Western at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in a rare Saturday/Sunday series.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Cougars enter the weekend ranked No. 6 in the CIS and in third place in Canada West's Pioneer Division after opening the conference schedule with seven wins in their first eight games. They took weekend sweeps over Brandon, Lethbridge, and Winnipeg during the first half of Canada West play, with their only setback coming during a road split with second-place Alberta.

Trinity Western (3-5) is battling for playoff position in the Pioneer Division, as the Spartans currently sit in sixth place with the division's top seven teams to advance to the postseason.

Charlotte Kot continues to lead the Cougars in most offensive categories and is one of only three Canada West players to average in double figures in rebounds per game. Kot has already broken the 20-point barrier in two conference games this year and is averaging a double-double with 15.1 points and 10 rebounds a game. She also leads the U of R with seven blocks and is second on the team with 11 steals.

Alyssia Kajati is also ranked in the conference's top ten in rebounds with 8.4 per game, as the Cougars average 54 rebounds per game compared to just 36 for their opposition. Kajati (12.5 points per game) and Katie Polischuk (11.5 ppg) also average in double figures in scoring for the Cougars, while the usual starting five is rounded out by veteran guards Kehlsie Crone and Sidney Dobner.

Four players average at least 10 minutes played per game off the bench for the Cougars. That group includes Christina McCusker, Britton Belyk, Sara Hubenig, and Michaela Kleisinger.

Tessa Ratzlaff leads Trinity Western in both points per game (16.3) and rebounds per game (6.9), while Jessie Brown is shooting 42% from three-point range and is averaging 15.5 points per game. After this weekend, the Spartans will have a bye week before returning to action on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 at home against Calgary.

The Cougars will also have next weekend off. They'll then travel to the West Coast for a pair of games against UBC.
