Cougars start non-conference with wins over Brandon, Manitoba

| Box Score 2

The University of Regina's women's basketball team started out its non-conference schedule on Thursday and Friday with a pair of road wins, defeating Brandon by a 75-68 margin before recording a convincing 97-29 win over Manitoba.

The team will now prepare to host the Cougar Classic, a three-day non-conference event stretching from Thursday to Saturday that features six teams – the Cougars, Alberta, Fraser Valley, Saskatchewan, and OUA schools Carleton and Ryerson.

Thursday – Regina 75, Brandon 68
The Cougars trailed 11-0 at one point early in the game, but a big second quarter in which they outscored host Brandon by a 26-13 margin gave them a seven-point lead at halftime.  The U of R extended the lead to 64-50 after three, and held on for a 75-68 win in their first game against CIS competition this season.

Friday – Regina 97, Manitoba 29 [box]
There was little doubt from the start about this one, with the Cougars taking a 30-2 lead over Manitoba after the first quarter and then coasting to their second win in as many nights.

Christina McCusker had a big game off the bench for the Cougars, going 6-for-7 from the field and 8-for-9 from the line to finish with 20 points in just 15 minutes played. Rookie Kyanna Giles had 11 points and nine rebounds to finish just short of a double-double, while second-year guard Avery Pearce chipped in with 10 points.
