Marshall, Vorrieter help Cougars past Bisons

The University of Regina women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory at home against the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, bumping them into fourth place in a crowded Canada West Prairie Division.

Racquel Marshall and Karlee Vorrieter (pictured) were the goal scorers for the Cougars, while Sara Schur found the net for Manitoba.

With the win, Regina overtakes Manitoba for fourth place in the division, improving to 3-5-3 on the season.

Schur's goal came in the 31st minute following a wild scramble in front. Bruna Mavignier went flying into the box as Ashton Lowry came out of her net and the two met the ball at the same time. Mavignier ended up on her back but was able to poke the ball back to Schur who floated a shot over a retreating Lowry from about 20 yards out.

Regina had a good chance to even things up just a couple minutes later off a corner kick, as Vorrieter's shot was blocked but the rebound ended up on the foot of Chantelle Doell. The second-year defender wheeled and fired, but her shot sailed wide of the right post.

The Cougars evened the score in the 41st minute off another corner kick opportunity. Vorrieter sent a low cross into the box that ended up right on the path of Marshall who was pressing towards the left post. Marshall's effort deflected off a Bison defender but still had enough on it to end up in the back of the net for the fifth-year defenders first goal of the season.

Regina wasted no time taking the lead after Marshall's goal, as the attack went back to work in the 43rd minute. Nikita Senko sent a smooth through ball to a streaking Sydney Langen on the right side of the box and Langen put a shot on net. Maddie Wilford made the initial stop for Manitoba, but the rebound trickled across the front of the net just a few yards from the goal line. Vorrieter was in a foot race with a Bison defender and was able to get there first, sending a left-footed effort home to put Regina on top.

The Cougars carried their momentum into the second half, as Langen and Vorrieter each had solid opportunities to add an insurance goal. Wilford was up to the task in net, making two of her five saves to keep it a one-goal match.

Ashton Lowry was solid in her return to the net for the Cougars, making four saves and coming out to play a couple of crucial Bison crosses down the stretch.

Regina will play host to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday for their final regular-season home game. The Wesmen dropped to 2-6-3 after falling 3-0 to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday. Sunday's match will kick off at noon at the U of R Field.
