Cougars drop 2-0 decision to first-place Dinos

The University of Regina women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the No. 3-ranked Calgary Dinos at the U of R Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Regina (2-4-2) held their own against the undefeated Dinos, who own the top spot of the Prairie Division standings with a 7-0-1 record after Sunday's win. The Cougars outshot the Dinos 18-17 on the afternoon, but were unable to capitalize.

Montana Leonard and Kelsie MacDonald were the goal scorers for the Dinos, with midfielder Maddie Lee assisting on both.

Leonard's goal came in the 48th minute when Lee crossed a ball into the box from the right wing. Leonard, who had subbed in at half, was able to get a foot on it in traffic and deflect it past Cougar keeper Kacey McFee.

MacDonald's goal came ten minutes later, as she took a shot from near the top left corner of the box. The ball deflected off the fingertips of McFee and bounced across the goalline before the Cougars were able to recover and clear it.

Regina had a pair of good chances in the first half to take the lead, with Kayla McDonald narrowly missing the net on an effort in the 30th minute and Karlee Vorrieter nearly hammering one home in the 42nd.

Nikita Senko, Olivia Bolen and Vorrieter were the only Cougars to register a shot on goal, while McDonald and Vorrieter each had a game-high five shots.

Sophia Traxler made three saves for her seventh win of the season, while McFee also stopped three shots after coming on for Ashton Lowry in the 17th minute.

Regina is back in action next weekend for a home-and-home set with the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Cougars will host the Huskies on Friday night at the U of R Field before travelling to Saskatoon for a Sunday afternoon match.
