A three-goal outburst in the second period powered the Manitoba Bisons to a 6-3 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West men's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre. 

For the second consecutive day the two teams went into the first intermission tied at 1-1, but Manitoba got goals from Jordan DePape, Rene Hunter and Brett Stovin in the middle stanza to take a commanding 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.

J.J. Coleshaw and Ian McNulty both scored for the Cougars in the first half of the third period to get to within one, but the comeback attempt fell short as Manitoba's Justin Augert restored a two-goal lead with five minutes to go.

An empty-net goal by Warren Callis sealed the win with a minute and a half to go.

Stovin had a huge game for Manitoba, assisting on the Bisons' first three goals of the game to give him a four-point effort. DePape had two assists to give him a three-point game, while Brad Bowles scored Manitoba's first of the game on the power play in the first period. Bowles' goal was one of three on the power play for Manitoba, as the goals by Hunter and Stovin were also with the man advantage. Manitoba was 3-for-10 with the power play, while the Cougars were successful on one of their two opportunities.

Byron Spriggs got his second start in as many days for Manitoba, making 27 saves to notch his second win of the season.

Besides his third-period goal, Coleshaw (pictured) also opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first to give the second-year forward his second multi-goal game of his CIS career. Tyler Bell, Brody Luhning, and Cody Fowlie each registered assists for the Cougars, who drop to 1-3-0 on the season with the loss.

Manitoba (2-2-0) is back in action next weekend with two home games against UBC, while the Cougars have a home-and-home with Saskatchewan. The two teams will meet in Regina at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night before finishing off the weekend set in Saskatoon on Saturday night.
