The University of Regina men's hockey team is looking to get back in the win column this weekend, as the Cougars will play a home-and-home series with the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Huskies took three of the four matchups from the Cougars a season ago.
The Cougars are sporting a 1-3-0 record after a pair of losses to the Manitoba Bisons last weekend at home. Saskatchewan enters the weekend ranked No. 3 nationally, with a 4-1-1 record.
After opening the season with a 2-1 win over Lethbridge, the Cougars have suffered three-straight defeats, falling 4-2 to the Pronghorns and 5-1 and 6-3 to the Bisons.
J.J. Coleshaw is leading the way offensively for Regina with three goals to his credit.
Landon Peel has three helpers, while
Cody Fowlie,
Dillan McCombie,
Tyler Bell and
Isaac Schacher each have two points.
Andy Desautels has appeared in all four games between the pipes for the Cougars, making three starts and registering a 3.02 goals-against average with a .905 save percentage.
Four Saskatchewan skaters are tied for first in the conference with seven points, though the Huskies have played two more games than six Canada West teams. Logan McVeigh, Michael Soffilas, Kohl Bauml and Jesse Forsberg have all notched seven points through their first six contests, while Josh Roach is right behind with six.
Reigning CIS goaltender of the year Jordan Cooke has been impressive through six games for the Huskies, sporting a 1.95 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.
Friday's game on home ice is the annual Shine On game in support of the Shine On Foundation, which was created to help financially support mothers with an advanced cancer diagnosis. Funds from the program allow the affected families to create lifelong positive memories.
The Shine On Foundation was created in the fall of 2013 in the honour of Chantelle Desmarais, who passed away in September of 2013 following a year-long battle with cancer. Chantelle was the wife of former Cougar hockey player Blair Ledingham and mother to their three children. 22Fresh sweatshirts will be on sale at the game, with proceeds from those and the game-night 50/50 draw going to the Shine On Foundation.
Saturday's rematch is set for a 7 p.m. puck drop in Saskatoon.
