The University of Regina women's hockey team is back in action this weekend with a home-and-home set against the provincial-rival Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Cougars (2-3-1-0) are coming off a pair of road losses against the No. 7-ranked Manitoba Bisons. The hometown Bisons dropped the Cougars 5-1 and 7-1 on home ice, as
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch and
Kylie Gavelin scored the only Cougar goals on the weekend.
Jaycee Magwood leads the Cougars in scoring with six points through the first six games.
Kylie Gavelin,
Kylee Kupper,
Merissa Zerr and Carpenter-Boesch each have two goals to their credit.
Saskatchewan enters the weekend a spot above Regina in the Canada West standings with a 3-1-2-0 record. The No. 9-ranked Huskies scooped up two road wins last weekend against the Lethbridge Pronghorns and are riding a five-game winning streak.
Kaitlin Willoughby and Lauren Zary lead the way offensively for the Huskies with five points apiece.
Jane Kish has been the winning goaltender in all three of the Cougars' victories, recording a 3.09 goals-against average and an .887 save percentage in her five appearances. Rookie
Morgan Baker has set marks of 3.37 and .838 in three games.
Cassidy Hendricks has played in five of the six games for the Huksies, posting a 1.70 GAA and a .931 save percentage. First-year netminder Jasey Rae Book notched a win in her only appearance, stopping 14 of 16 shots.
The Cougars won one of the four matchups between the two teams last season, with one of the games going to overtime and the Cougar win taking two extra frames to decide a winner.
Friday's matchup will take place in Saskatoon before Saturday's rematch at The Co-operators Centre.
