The University of Regina women's soccer team's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the Saskatchewan Huskies put away the Cougars with a 2-0 win in a Canada West Prairie Division play-in game at PotashCorp Park.
Saskatchewan's Taniel Gay netted what would be the game-winner in the 21st minute and Jackson Wiegers added an insurance marker in the 70th minute.
Gay took a feed from Wiegers and sent a shot from just outside the right corner of the box to the top corner of the net, just out of a sprawling
Ashton Lowry's reach.
The Cougars nearly drew even in the 60th minute as
Sydney Langen was able to dribble through the Huskie defence but her shot was stopped by Kyleigh Vause.
Wiegers' goal came on a tough break for the Cougars, as Lowry was able to make the initial save on a Huskie shot but Wiegers was in the right spot for her second point of the match.
The Huskies controlled the game offensively, totalling 29 shots. Seven of those shots were on target, forcing Lowry to make five saves. Regina countered with seven shots, but only two efforts from Langen tested Vause.
The Huskies tallied seven corner kicks to the Cougars' none.
The match marks the final appearance for fifth-year athletes
Karlee Vorrieter,
Racquel Marshall,
Kayla McDonald and
Kacey McFee.
Saskatchewan will move on to the Canada West Select Six, hosted by the highest-remaining Pacific Division seed after this weekend's matches.
