The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team overcame a slow start for a 75-52 road win over MacEwan on Friday night at the City Centre Campus Gym in Edmonton.
Â
It was all MacEwan to start. The Griffins scored the first eight points of the game and built up a double-digit lead on two separate occasions in the first quarter before taking a 21-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Â
But the Cougars outscored MacEwan by a 23-12 margin in the second to take a 38-33 advantage at halftime, extended their lead to double digits by the end of the third quarter, and poured it on in the fourth. The U of R allowed only two points in the first eight minutes of the final quarter, going on a 15-2 run in that span to put the game away.
Â
The Cougars, now 3-0 in Canada West play and 15-0 overall against U Sports competition this year, were led in scoring by
Katie Polischuk. The fifth-year guard hit six triples and finished with a game-high 23 points, while
Avery Pearce came off the bench to register career highs in both points (11) and assists (6).
Ainsley MacIntyre didn't start, but played 22 minutes and led all players with nine rebounds.
Â
Paige Knull had 14 points to lead MacEwan, which falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
Â
The two teams will finish off the two-game weekend series on Saturday night at 5:00 MST (
