Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars come back for Saturday win; score key weekend sweep over TWU

A day after recording its biggest road win in program history over Trinity Western, the University of Regina's men's basketball team needed to execute a late fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday to secure a weekend sweep over the Spartans with a 100-94 victory at the Langley Events Centre.

The Cougars went down six midway through the fourth quarter after a three-pointer by Trinity Western's Pogos Trunyan, but Alex Igual responded immediately with a three of his own. That started a 7-0 run for the U of R that put the visitors back in the lead, though another three by Trunyan put Trinity Western up 89-87 with just under two minutes to go.

But that triple by Trunyan turned out to be Trinity Western's last field goal of the game. The Cougars took the lead back on a Stephen Shields layup off a Cougar timeout, and a pair of huge free throws by Aaron McGowan made it a two-possession game with 25.1 seconds left on the clock.

Rookie guard Johneil Johnson had another strong outing for the Cougars, leading the team and setting career highs in both points (22) and rebounds (9) while falling just short of his first U Sports double-double. McGowan had 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists while playing in 38 of 40 minutes, while Igual (12 points), Brian Ofori (11), and Travis Sylvestre (10) also scored in double figures.

Trunyan hit six triples and led all players with 26 points for Trinity Western. Tyus Allen was on his way to a triple-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists but left the game with what appeared to be a knee injury midway through the final quarter.

The win improves Regina's record to 4-2 on the season. The Cougars sit in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings, and host one of the other 4-2 teams next weekend as Saskatchewan will make the short trip south. The Cougars and the Huskies will battle on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport with tip-off set for 8 p.m. both nights.
