A day after giving Calgary all they could handle, the University of Regina men's hockey team fell by a 6-1 margin to the Dinos at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
The Cougars took Calgary to double overtime on Friday night but the Dinos netted four goals in the first period on Saturday afternoon to put the Cougars in a big hole early. Logan Fisher opened the scoring and Coda Gordon added two goals before Friday night's double-overtime hero Danny Gayle scored the fourth for Calgary. Brayden Sherbinin and Elgin Pearce notched third period goals for the Dinos.
Cody Fowlie (pictured) scored midway through the third to break the shutout, but the Dinos didn't give the Cougars a chance build any momentum towards a comeback.
Andy Desautels had a rough outing for the Cougars, who fall to 3-11-0 with the result. The second-year netminder started the game but was pulled after the fourth Dino goal at the 16:58 mark of the first.
Mitch Kilgore came on in relief and stopped 19 shots in just over two periods of work. Matthew Greenfield got the win in net for the Dinos, making 32 saves and allowing a single goal.
The Cougars were plagued with penalties on Saturday afternoon, finding themselves trying to kill off five Dinos penalties. The home team capitalized on two of their chances with the man advantage, as Gordon's first goal and Pearce's marker both came on the powerplay. Regina was 0-for-3 on the powerplay.
Fowlie's goal in the third period marks his third of the season and was assisted by
Tristan Frei, who grows his point streak grows to five games after scoring a goal on Friday night. Fowlie has a four-game point streak of his own.
Regina is back at home next weekend to close out the 2016 portion of the Canada West schedule against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
