After a tough six-point win over Trinity Western on Friday night, the No. 2-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team looked completely different on Saturday in an 85-47 over the Spartans.
TWU scored the first bucket of the game, but it was all Cougars from there. They scored 19 consecutive points after that, led 27-6 after the first quarter, and scored 30 in the second quarter to take a commanding 57-22 lead into the halftime break.
The first half saw the Cougars shoot a blistering 73% from the field, as they hit 24 of their 33 shots including five of their 10 attempted three-pointers.
The Spartans put together a 17-4 run in the third quarter, but only got to within 24 points. Regina allowed only four fourth-quarter points to the Spartans to finish with a 38-point margin of victory, just 24 hours after battling to a 57-51 victory over the same TWU squad.
Britton Belyk came off the bench to go a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and lead all players with a career-high 19 points in the win. Rookie post
Angela Bongomin had her first double-double as a Cougar with career highs in both points (12) and rebounds (13), while fellow rookie
Kyanna Giles matched her with 12 points and
Katie Polischuk and
Michaela Kleisinger both chipped in with 11.
Tessa Brown led Trinity Western (4-4) with 15 points.
The win improves Regina's record to 5-1. The Cougars will now prepare for a pair of weekend games against Saskatchewan to close out the first half of the Canada West schedule. The two teams will meet next Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport with tip-off set for 6 p.m. both nights.
