Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars' season comes to a close as Thunderbirds hang on

The University of Regina women's hockey team fell for the second time in as many nights, as the UBC Thunderbirds punched their ticket to the Canada West final with a 3-2 win on home ice on Sunday.

After a convincing 3-0 win in the series opener, the Cougars were defeated on back-to-back nights by the No. 8-ranked Thunderbirds.

UBC used first period goals from Rebecca Unrau and Haneet Parhar to jump to an early lead on Sunday, before Kathleen Cahoon added to the lead in the third with her second goal in as many nights. The Cougars begun a charge of their own in attempt to save their season, but goals late in the third period from Kylee Kupper and Jaycee Magwood weren't enough to complete the comeback.

Danielle Dube caused trouble for the Cougars for the second-straight game, stopping 22 shots to help the T-Birds advance in the playoffs. Toni Ross also made 22 saves at the other end of the ice in her final game with the Cougars.

Trailing 3-0 in the third, the Cougars got on the board following a roughing penalty assessed to Cailey Hay. The Cougars powerplay capitalized, as Kupper netted her first of the playoffs at the 12:56 mark off assists from Tamara McVannel and Stephanie Sawchuk.

Regina had numerous chances to draw closer, as the Thunderbirds took four more penalties in the remaining seven minutes and change. The Cougars found another goal with just a second to play on the clock, as Magwood scored her third of the postseason with Ross out of the game for an extra attacker. Emma Waldenberger and Bailey Braden assisted on the goal, but the Thunderbirds celebrated their victory just a single tick later.

The game marks the final CIS contest for fifth-year players Ross, Sawchuk, Carleen Meszaros and Brooklyn Moskowy.
