The University of Regina's women's basketball team rolled to a big 93-44 win over Manitoba on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Katie Polischuk (pictured) led all scorers with 19 points for the Cougars, who improve their conference record to 9-2 with the victory.
Kyanna Giles added 16 points for the U of R, while
Caitlin Zacharias scored 14 in the win.
"I was happy with our energy and we were able to get contributions from our entire roster tonight," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "For the most part, I was pleased with our rebounding and defence and I'm looking forward to seeing a similar effort tomorrow."
The Cougars took control of this one early, going on a massive 24-0 run which turned a three-point Manitoba advantage into a 21-point Regina lead in the early going of the second quarter. The Bisons never threatened after that as the Cougars enjoyed a 42-23 advantage at the half, pushed the lead to 66-37 after three, and outscored Manitoba by a 27-7 margin in the fourth.
Giles also had nine rebounds to finish just short of a double-double for the Cougars, who outrebounded Manitoba by a 66-38 margin.
Ainsley MacIntyre added nine points, while
Sara Hubenig and
Michaela Kleisinger both scored six and four other Cougars –
Britton Belyk,
Angela Bongomin,
Avery Pearce, and
Alexi Rowden – all finished with five points.
Taylor Randall led Manitoba (1-10) with 15 points.
The two teams will finish off the weekend set on Saturday night. Game time is again set for 6:00 at the CKHS.
NOTES: Polischuk now has 983 career points and needs only 17 more to hit 1000 ... Polischuk would become the 11th player in U of R history to hit that career milestone.
